Despite the cloudy atmosphere and heavy lyrics, Whitney Ballen’s warm crooning encases each of her songs in beauty, making even the saddest recollections irresistible. Ballen’s music is reminiscent of both past folk and country greats like Karen Dalton and Dolly Parton, as well as sentimental indie artists like Joanna Newsom and Mount Eerie. Like them, Ballen is also able to access human complexity, sadness and despair without ever coming across as trite or heavy handed.  Her sincerity and authenticity is audible in writing and sound—a return to indie rock’s original charm.
